Camping in Colorado requires some serious foresight. Most campsites book up six months out and it can be difficult to find a camping stop at the last minute. Unless, of course, you seek out one of Colorado’s beautiful dispersed camping sites. Well, we tried that and we quickly learned that it isn’t as easy as it looks!
Dispersed camping is very popular in Colorado, which means that sites fill up quickly on the weekends. A few weekends ago, we took a risk and attempted to find a site at the West Magnolia Campground near Nederland, Colorado on a Friday evening. Unfortunately, we were too late and the campground was full by the time we got there. And to make it worse – we damaged the camper while we were looking for a site! Perhaps a 21 foot travel trailer is not ideal for off-roading…
Thankfully, we had a backup campsite reserved near the east portal of Rocky Mountain National Park. That site ended up being the perfect launching pad for RMNP and for Estes Park. Not only was the location great, but it also had wonderful amenities and a friendly staff. Check back soon for our full campground review!
For now, I suppose we’ll stick to the reserved campsites…
