Summit County, Colorado is one of our favorite places in all of Colorado. Not only does it boast world-class skiing in the winter, but it also has incredible camping and hiking in the summer. Our weekend at Prospector Campground was full of good company, good drinks, good food, and…huge hail… If you haven’t seen our review of Prospector Campground, check it out here!
Usually, Summit County also has some of the best summer weather in the state because it is so much cooler than Denver. On this particular weekend, however, that didn’t quite hold true…. It was cooler than Denver but we were also hit with a large hail storm on Saturday afternoon. Of course the hail started about 30 seconds after I told our friend Jordan, “don’t worry, it doesn’t hail at this altitude.” WHELP. I was wrong. It hailed a lot. And the hail was big. But we were safe and (mostly) dry, so we still had a great time. Thankfully, neither our camper nor any of the cars were damaged! Someday, we’ll tell you the story about how our first camper was totaled in a hail storm just a few months after we bought it…. As you can imagine, hail is a sensitive subject over here.
Due to the weather, this video shows all of the ways we use many of the things featured in our recent post, Stocking your Camper: The Fun, Totally Unnecessary Stuff. We used the tent canopy and firepit to stay dry and warm in the rain and hail and we used the camp oven to cook breakfast – just to name a few! Without those fun items, the weekend would have been a lot colder and a lot less enjoyable.
While it wasn’t hailing, we were bumming around the campsite, eating and drinking Frisco, and hanging out on the Dillon Reservoir. I particularly enjoyed my time in my inflatable kayak, although I accidentally paddled much father than I intended… The entire weekend was very fun – it was a perfect way to get away for a few days. We hope you enjoy the video!
